‘My Dear Takeshima,

‘When I went to visit Ema this morning he still had not returned. His mother was in a real state and hadn’t slept all night. Well, in the end he did come back, and when I saw his face I wanted to cry. He went to bed without a word to either of us and fell asleep straightaway. Thinking it better to leave him to rest, I went off to work, but when I got home about four o’clock there was a letter waiting for me—from Ema. As far as I can judge from what he wrote he is resigned to a divorce, but does not want it to happen just yet, for he says that if they remove O-tsuru’s name from the register he will feel that they no longer have any connection and that would be unbearable. He asks me to see about the question of the register in a little while, but he is obviously an unhappy man. In the letter he goes on and on about being so much in love with a woman who did not love him and how he was unable to demonstrate the reality of his love. Although I’ve heard from you what happened at their meeting, I thought you would like to know about this. I, at least, can do no more. O-tsuru shows no sign of wanting to marry again so I think we should do as Ema suggests over the matter of the register.

‘Today I received orders that I was to go to the Hokkaido branch of my company and I shall have to leave in three or four days. I would like to have seen you before I go, but I’m so busy that it will not be possible. If you could get up to Tokyo, I’d be delighted, for I should indeed like to meet you.’
